Ecology is the study of interactions between organisms and their environment. The environment includes all living (biotic) and non-living (abiotic) components that surround and influence life. Understanding these interactions is the foundation for everything else in the paper.

Ecosystems: structure and function

An ecosystem is a community of living organisms interacting with their physical environment as a functional unit. Its structure has abiotic components (sunlight, temperature, water, soil, nutrients) and biotic components (producers, consumers and decomposers). Its functioning rests on two processes: the one-way flow of energy and the cycling of nutrients.

Energy enters through producers and passes to herbivores and then carnivores. Because energy is lost as heat at each step, only about a tenth transfers to the next trophic level — the ten percent law — which is why food chains are short and top predators are few.

Biodiversity and its levels

Biodiversity exists at three levels: genetic (variation within a species), species (variety of species) and ecosystem (variety of habitats and communities). India is a megadiverse country and contains globally important biodiversity hotspots — the Himalaya, the Western Ghats and Sri Lanka, the Indo-Burma region and Sundaland. Species are assessed for extinction risk on the IUCN Red List, from Least Concern up to Critically Endangered and Extinct.

Conservation: in-situ and ex-situ

Conservation takes two broad forms. In-situ conservation protects species in their natural habitat through protected areas; ex-situ conservation protects them outside it, in zoos, botanical gardens, seed banks and captive-breeding programmes.

Climate change: the science and the response

The greenhouse effect is the natural warming caused by gases such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide trapping heat; human emissions have intensified it, driving global warming and climate change. The IPCC assesses the science, and the response is coordinated under the UNFCCC (1992). Its milestones are the Kyoto Protocol (1997), which bound developed countries, and the Paris Agreement (2015), under which every country sets Nationally Determined Contributions to limit warming well below 2 degrees Celsius and pursue 1.5. India has pledged net-zero emissions by 2070 and pursues climate action domestically through the National Action Plan on Climate Change and its missions.

Pollution and environmental degradation

Pollution is the introduction of harmful substances into the environment. Air pollution from combustion and industry drives respiratory disease and is tracked through the Air Quality Index; water pollution degrades rivers and groundwater; and solid and plastic waste strain land and oceans. The Central Pollution Control Board monitors and sets standards, while degradation such as deforestation, desertification and soil erosion undermines ecosystem services.

Environmental governance: laws and institutions

India's environmental framework is anchored in the Constitution — Article 48A directs the State to protect the environment, Article 51A(g) makes it a fundamental duty of citizens, and the courts have read the right to a healthy environment into the right to life under Article 21. The key statutes are the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, the Water Act, 1974, the Air Act, 1981, the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980 and the umbrella Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, under which the Environmental Impact Assessment process operates. The National Green Tribunal provides specialised environmental adjudication.
